Honor the Shield

“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called.” 1 Timothy 6:12

If we are not careful, our eyes drift to the glitter on the battlefield. The gold. The trophies. The things our world screams at us to chase. That same temptation is what keeps many in the next generation from picking up the shield of faith. Their values are being reshaped by a culture that celebrates the spoils instead of the Savior. But Scripture is clear.

The one treasure you can give your family that matters above everything else is the shield of faith. Honor it. Guard it. Pass it on.

Sitting in church is not a pointless routine. You are polishing your shield. Prayer is not empty words. You are strengthening your shield. When you read scripture to your children, when you correct them gently with truth, when you turn on worship in the car, when your tears fall while you cook dinner, and God’s presence fills the room, you are defending the shield. You are showing the next generation what matters most.

Some of the most powerful moments in my own life were quietly woven into the ordinary. I grew up in a home that felt safe and full of peace. No fighting. No shouting. Just a mother and father who loved Jesus and loved us. Some of my favorite memories are of me and my siblings playing church. That little white clothes rack became a microphone. Shoe boxes became drums. An ironing board became the church organ. Our home was full of God.

I remember moments where the pretend singing turned real. The presence of the Lord would enter that tiny room, and suddenly we were crying and worshiping with hearts that felt grown. That is passing the shield. That is generational victory. My father loved Jesus. He was a Spartan in the Spirit. He fought for his family. He prayed over us. He wrote out my first sermon on an envelope. He showed me what matters most.

And that same shield is in your hands today. It is not a toy. It is not optional. The world will try to dazzle you with gold and distract you with glitter. But greatness has never been measured by what a person owns. It has always been measured by what a person defends.

You are a spiritual warrior. Guard the shield. Honor the shield. And pass it on to your children and your children’s children.

Prayer: Lord, help me value the shield of faith above everything else. Give me wisdom to lead my family well and courage to stand firm in a world that is drifting. Strengthen my faith and help me pass it to those I love. Amen.
