Follow The Stones

“This is what the Lord says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it…’” Jeremiah 6:16

Success cannot be measured in dollars, the house you live in, or the car you drive. Success in God’s eyes is raising up your family in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Success is getting your kids to Heaven, holding your marriage together, and making your life count for the purpose and plan of God.

In Joshua 4, a new generation was about to step into the promised land. There were only two men who were there from the previous generation and one of those men was Joshua. Joshua commanded the people to stop and do something before they proceeded. He told them they needed to do this one thing first “to ensure their success.” He said, “Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” He was basically saying, the next generation needs to know about the great things that God did to get us here.

Even though we are living in a modern culture, we cannot let the “stones” and foundations of our faith become forgotten.

There are teachings today that will tell our children they can go to Heaven through many different religions or by being a “good human being.” We need to make sure they know there is only one way to Heaven and that is through Jesus Christ. Prayer, seeking God, and fasting are pillars that have kept us close to God and following His path. These are stones that our families will need to walk across in this evil age in order to stay on the straight and narrow path.

Maybe you feel like you are not leaving much of a legacy because you are not wealthy and cannot leave your kids a great fortune. But if you leave your children a stack of rocks that shows them the way of life and the path to Heaven, then you’ve left them the greatest inheritance there is. Proverbs 22:28 says, “Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your ancestors.” Start stacking stones for your children. Build a beautiful memorial in your home that your family can follow.
