"As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." Proverbs 23:7
Your life will always move in the direction of the dominant images you allow to reside in your mind. There is an example of this in the Bible. Two successful men, Abraham and Lot, faced a situation where the land could not support both of their flocks. They decided to separate. Lot pitched his tent facing the city of sin, Sodom and Gomorrah. Over time, the dominant image in his life became sin and rebellion against God. Eventually, he lost everything and was forced to flee the city. It all began because the main thing he focused on day after day was sin.
Abraham, on the other hand, kept his focus on the author and finisher of his faith. He continued to succeed and grow because his mind was fixed on the right things.
Your life will always begin to move in the direction of the most dominant images you are seeing.
That is why it is so important to be mindful of what you allow into your thoughts. If you constantly think about lack, poverty, and struggles, you will continue to attract those things. The wrong images lead to the wrong direction. The right pictures lead to the right direction. You can guide your life by controlling the images you hold in your mind.
This principle is why good sports coaches avoid focusing only on what a player is doing wrong. Constant correction without positive imagery only reinforces the mistake in the player’s mind. Instead, great coaches emphasize the correct action and have the player repeat it until they can visualize themselves performing it. Many baseball pitchers begin their training without even throwing a ball. They rehearse the motion in their mind and mimic the motion without a ball until it becomes natural. Coaches refer to this as muscle memory. The mind works in a similar way. If you train your thoughts to believe that you can achieve something and repeatedly visualize yourself doing it, eventually you will.
If you want to be debt-free, do not tape your bills on your mirror. Focusing on the problem does not solve it. Focusing on the solution is what moves you forward. David did not fixate on the size of Goliath. Instead, he went around asking what the reward would be for defeating him. He kept his attention on the prize. He would live a tax-free life and marry the king’s daughter. David defeated the giant easily because he was not focused on failure.
Sometimes you have to experience what you desire before you can fully take hold of it. For example, Terry Holland dreamed of winning the Miss USA pageant. After coming in second place twice, she bought five hundred videos of past Miss USA competitions and watched them repeatedly. She imagined herself in that moment each time the crown was placed on the winner’s head. When she eventually won Miss America, she said that walking down that boardwalk was not a new experience for her. She had already done it five hundred times in her mind.
