Big Doors Swing on Little Hinges
“Who despises the day of small things?” Zechariah 4:10 NIV
Zechariah speaks to a people who were rebuilding with tired hands and weary hearts. The foundation had been laid by Zerubbabel, but the work felt slow, unimpressive, and small. God’s promise was clear. The same hands that started the work would finish it. Then the Lord asked a piercing question. Who has despised the day of small things? In other words, who has put little value on what God is doing right now.
We live in a world that celebrates the big, the fast, and the visible. But God watches the small and the hidden. He watches faithfulness when no one is applauding. He watches obedience when progress feels slow. Right where you are today is not a holding pattern. It is part of God’s plan. If God truly directs your steps, then this season matters just as much as the one you are praying for.
Scripture shows us that God rarely moves people from promise straight to fulfillment. There is always preparation. For every calling, there is training. For every promotion, there is process. God does not waste seasons. He shapes character in places we are tempted to rush through. When you honor the small, God opens the door to more.
Joseph is a powerful example. God gave him a great dream, but the path to the palace led through a pit, a prison, and forgotten seasons. Five times Scripture reminds us that God was with Joseph. God was with him in the pit. God was with him in the prison. God was with him when others forgot him. Joseph refused to treat those seasons as meaningless. He worked with excellence where he was. He honored God in small assignments. Because he was faithful in what looked insignificant, God trusted him with influence.
If Joseph had dismissed the prison as unimportant, he never would have reached the palace. Faithfulness in the small is not optional. It is foundational. Big doors truly do swing on little hinges. What you do with today determines what God entrusts you with tomorrow. Do not despise where you are. Do not minimize the season God is using to prepare you. Stay faithful. Stay diligent. Stay obedient. The same God who called you is watching. And He is faithful to finish what He has started.
Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I have undervalued where You have placed me. Help me to be faithful in the small things and trust You in the process. Teach me to honor every season, knowing You are shaping me for what is ahead. Strengthen my hands to finish what You have called me to begin. In Jesus’ name, amen.
