Colombia Needs Our Prayers: How You Can Help After the Earthquake

On Monday, August 10, 2026, the ground shook in western Colombia and lives were changed forever.

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the department of Chocó, the strongest to hit Colombia this century, killing at least 294 people, injuring more than 3,900, and leaving over 300 confirmed missing. More than 12,000 homes were destroyed, and more than 74,000 residences were damaged. Over 170 buildings collapsed. Five airports and 44 aqueducts were affected.

In Cali, a city of two million people, at least 40 buildings collapsed, including parts of a hospital where patients were trapped under rubble in the pediatrics department. In Pereira, rescuers worked through the night carving a small opening in debris to free a woman pinned beneath the rubble, with a doctor administering IV fluids on site to stabilize her before she could be freed.

This is not just a news story. These are our brothers and sisters made in the image of God. And they need us right now.

What Is Happening on the Ground

Rescue efforts have entered what officials called the final phase, as the critical 72-hour window for finding survivors came to an end. The earthquake is the strongest to hit Colombia this century.

The earthquake hit at 7:34 in the morning local time, when families were waking up, children were heading to school, and people were beginning their day. Authorities deployed engineers, rescue workers, and search dogs to the Chocó region, though the area is remote and difficult to access. Colombia declared a national emergency and launched search and rescue operations across affected areas.

The need is enormous. Families have lost everything. Communities are cut off. And the work of rebuilding will take months, if not years.

What the Bible Says About This Moment

When disaster strikes somewhere in the world, it is easy to feel helpless. Like there is nothing we can do from where we are.

But Scripture tells us something different.

"Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray." — James 5:13

Prayer is not a passive response. It is an active, powerful, faith-filled act that reaches places no rescue team can go. When we pray, we are releasing the power of God into a situation that is beyond human capacity to fix.

The Psalms remind us that God is not distant in moments of disaster:

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea." — Psalm 46:1-2

The mountains literally shook in Colombia this week. But God did not move. He is still a refuge. He is still a present help. And when we pray, we are agreeing with that truth on behalf of the people who may not have the strength to believe it right now.

A Prayer for Colombia

Pray this today over the people of Colombia:

Father, we come to You on behalf of the people of Colombia. We lift up every family who lost someone in this earthquake. We ask You to bring comfort that only You can give, the kind that passes all understanding.

Lord, we pray for every rescue worker who is still searching through rubble. Give them strength, clarity, and the miracle of finding life where it seems impossible. We pray for the injured and the missing, for protection, for healing, for the miracle of survival.

God, we pray for the children who are scared and confused. Be near to them. Let them feel Your peace. We pray for the leaders of Colombia as they navigate this disaster, give them wisdom, resources, and the support of the nations.

And Lord, for those who do not yet know You, let this be the moment when they cry out and discover that You are there, that You have always been there, and that You are a God who does not leave us alone in our darkest hour.
